We recommend descaling your coffee brewer with either Biocaf Descaling Powder or Dezcal Descaling Powder, both of which are citric acid-based descalers. These two products are made by Urnex, a USA-based company that has manufactured coffee and tea cleaning products for over 80 years. Biocaf and Dezcal are explicitly formulated to effectively descale coffee brewers without damaging them, and they are long proven to be effective and non-harmful to our machines. Dezcal Descaling Powder is a formulation of both citric and sulfamic acid, whereas Biocaf Descaling Powder’s primary descaling agent is citric acid, which is biodegradable.
Our partners in Europe recommend Durgol, a sulfamic acid-based descaler, which is also a good descaling option. Because Durgol is a liquid-filled bottle imported from Europe it tends to be more expensive, which is one reason we favor the Urnex options.
Ultimately, the formula of descaler-to-water determines whether or not it will help or harm your machine. We would never recommend putting pure citric or sulfamic acid into your coffee brewer, and a too-weak formula would not be effective at descaling, either. By using either Urnex or Durgol, and following the directions on the package, you will keep your Moccamaster coffee brewer functioning and healthy!
